Overview

Pittsburgh's Steel Valley along the Monongahela River made the steel which built America and fueled the Arsenal of Democracy for two World Wars. It was also the site of the Battle of Homestead 9 July 1892, the most consequential armed confrontation between workers and company-employed strikebreakers in American History.

George was enthusiastic, informative, and knew his subject very well. He also had multiple other interesting tidbits about Pittsburgh and the area as he drove us around that we did not expect. I lived in Pittsburgh for the first 18 years of my life and thought I knew a lot about it, but George’s introspective and wide repertoire of information was fantastic! Highly recommend a tour by George.

This tour is only for people who want an enthusiastic and knowledgeable tour guide born and raised in Pittsburgh and passionate about his city. If you can’t appreciate the maps and photographs that George provides and the lesser known but highly relevant places he takes you to see -then stay away. We were 3 generations of women ages 26, 63 and 88 and we all enjoyed George’s presentation. You can see photos in a museum and read about the steel mills in books, but driving around with and learning from George is way more FUN!

We didn’t know what to expect as there was no formal itinerary when we signed up - but we quickly realized it was because George wanted to make the tour as relevant to us as possible. He asked about our interests and hobbies, and tailored our experience to what we would find most interesting - making it very authentic and personable. He has a wealth of knowledge about Pittsburgh - being the son of a former trucker and true “Pittsburghian” who knows everything there is to know about the city. This is not a walking tour - George personally drives you through the history of what made Pittsburgh the true “Gateway to the West”. Not a ton of photo ops (granted we didn’t really ask) - but this isn’t that kind of tour and we were happy that it wasn’t.If you want to spend 2 hours with a hilarious, genuine, proud Pittsburgh native who will cater to your specific needs - and learn a lot of things you never knew - this is the tour for you. Highly recommend.Thank you George!

George presented the former steel industry in a foremat which was informative, interesting, and personal (George's father was a truck driver during the time of steel manufacturing). We focused the tour in Homestead, and although essentially all remnants of the former industrial complexes are gone, we were able to visualize where some 25,000 workers once toiled.

George is a wonderful tour guide, great personality, enthusiasm and knowledge. Our only complaint is that he shouldn’t be late and should let his customers know if he’s running late. His love of Pittsburgh and personal connections are a huge plus.
