A 16th-century Spanish colony near present-day Georgetown was the first European settlement in what would become the contiguous United States. The state hosts many important Revolutionary and Civil War historic sites, including Fort Sumter where the first shots of the war were fired on April 12, 1861. Other attractions include a pleasant subtropical climate, beautiful shorelines and beaches, forested mountains, cities like Charleston that recall the Antebellum South, world-class golf, and a variety of delicious regional cuisines.
