Overview

Experience Chattanooga’s newest attraction, The National Medal of Honor Heritage Center. Our permanent exhibits take our visitors from the actions that prompted the First Medals during the Civil War to the War on Terror conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. The Heritage Center offers an immersive experience that puts our visitors in the boots of Medal of Honor recipients and brings their heroic stories to life. Imagine yourself in the church where Dr. Mary Walker treated wounded soldiers, or inside a trench manning a machine gun during WWI or fighting in the forest with Charles Coolidge as he single-handedly took on a German Pazer tank.

Your experience begins in our orientation theater, where you will see a short introductory video exploring the history of the Medal of Honor. When the doors to the theater open, you will be transported to the Civil War era and learn about the Andrew’s Raiders and the Great Locomotive Chase.

My husband and I had NO idea how rich with history the city of Chattanooga is! Learning about the development of the area and about some of the major parts of the wars taking place here, was mind blowing to say the least. Best of all our guide Mr. Bob was extremely knowledgeable and entertaining. We would go back just to hear more about Chattanooga’s history from Mr. Bob any day. It was like getting to talk to an uncle with all the best war stories.

Very well done exhibits telling the history of the Medal of Honor, from beginning to present time. Told stories of recipients from Tennessee in depth. Bldg is 2 levels and there is an elevator to use.

An amazing museum that takes you through wars and our Heroes. It was very well done and although small, very well done. The docent we spoke with is a Veteran and it was great to speak with him. Our family enjoyed all aspects of this museum and certainly have a great appreciation for true American Heroes. It was wonderful how the recipients from Tennessee were highlighted as well.Don’t miss this gem. All families should be taking their children to this museum at any age.

We learned a lot, it was interesting and the guide was very helpful. A lot of work has gone into this museum and I'm grateful. We were told it would take us about an hour or so to go through it, but not wanting to miss anything, we were there till closing. Would go again.

We found this museum very interesting and will definitely tell others. Would love to know if other states have similar locations.

This was worth the price of admission. Many technology perks were added, a wall-sized interactive search to see veterans of Tennessee. The staff provided excellent support and were just finishing an additional room when we came upon it commemorating the Space Veterans efforts. The quality of the information about Valor, the medals purpose, and the qualities expected from each person were educational and inspiring.

Amazingly educational and informative. Many exhibits are interactive. Kids would really enjoy it, and learn so much! We stopped in last minute and thought they were open till 6:00, but only open till 5:00pm. However they were nice enough to quickly look thru the gift shop.

The individual stories were very moving. The way their stories were woven into the movement throughout the museum made the experience seamless as the stories spoke about the character of each recipient.

My BFF and I visited this museum yesterday after visiting the aquarium next door. We knew nothing about the museum until we walked into the doors. They are a fairly new museum that honors, displays and educates guests on the different Medals of Honor and some of their recipients. We left this museum with a much better understanding of this great honor. One of the first things I did after I left here was tag all my military friends on Facebook to be sure they knew this place existed. Most had said this is something that they would most certainly like to see for themselves.

What a phenomenal museum! I learned so much about the award itself as well as some of the men (and one woman) who earned it. Many well done exhibits and displays to highlight the various conflicts in which the medals were awarded. There are also items on display from some of the Soldiers, Airmen, Seamen, and Marines to include their actual Medals of Honor. Gift shop with some nice items. Reasonable prices and within walking distance of many other attractions and paid parking.
