About an hour and a half north of the Tampa–St. Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Area, on Florida’s Nature Coast, the small town of Crystal River is home to one of America’s top natural wonders. The town is built around Kings Bay, a body of water fed by a cluster of 50 natural springs that discharge about 64 million gallons of crystal-clear water every day. The Bay is winter home to over 400 manatees, and is the only place in the U.S. where humans can legally interact with these gentle vegetarian giants in their natural habitat. Close encounters are possible via kayaking, snorkeling, and swimming with the manatees, and it is an amazing, unforgettable experience for visitors of all ages.
