Welcome to Baker City

Oregon Trail wagon ruts still visible at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center indicate Baker City Oregon’s importance in America’s western frontier period. However, most immigrants passed through the area until gold was discovered 1861 a few miles south of the present-day town. Modern Baker City is a base camp for Eastern Oregon outdoor adventures in the Wallowa and Elkhorn mountains that tower to the east and west, on the nearby Snake River, and along the Hell’s Canyon Scenic Byway. In town, walking tour highlights include an authentic Victorian business district with 100 structures of historical significance including the 1889 Geiser Grande Hotel, and award-winning brew pubs.
