This unique tour was a site-specific experience at its best! This was my second visit to Juneau, but I had no previous idea of the Treadwell Mine history and had no idea what to expect. I was so impressed! The history of the place was fascinating and full of archaeological remnants that were brought to life through the dynamic tour guide and just the right balance of augmented reality overlays on ipads which really helped provide context and a deeper understanding of the place. The tour itself takes place on an easily walkable trail in a beautiful park next to the water and provided some amazing vistas. I learned a lot and would definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about Juneau's rich history.

Simply one of the best shore based experiences out there. So many tours fail to bring to life the history and stories in a compelling and engaging way. Each stop along this walking tour made the relics and ruins of the abandoned Treadwell Mine come to life. More than history, there were the stories of the people, the life and sometimes the tragic events that took place. The augmented reality really brought to life the scale of the place above and below ground in a way you would never otherwise understand. Not to be missed!

I'm a history buff, junky, serial podcast binger... this was a living breathing experience of something so unique, in a place unlike any other, on such a scale I couldn't have guessed. The way this tour comes alive through the interactive application of Augmented Reality was remarkable. It brought the whole history into the present and told it with a depth that I have never experienced.

Outstanding Hidden-Gem Experience in Juneau If you're looking for something beyond the typical tourist excursion in Juneau, Treadwell: Alaska's Lost Mine is absolutely worth your time. The tour combines local history, stunning scenery, and an adventure through areas that most visitors would never discover on their own or realize was there.The Treadwell team did an excellent job bringing the rich history of the Treadwell mining operation to life. Walking through the forested trails, exploring historic mining features, and hearing the stories of the people who lived and worked there provided a unique perspective on Southeast Alaska's past. The guide was knowledgeable, engaging, and clearly passionate about preserving and sharing the area's history.What stood out most was the balance between history, nature, and exploration. The tour felt authentic and personal rather than scripted. Along the way we experienced beautiful rainforest scenery, impressive remnants of the mining operation, and incredible views that showcased a side of Juneau that has been lost in time.

Fun and informative. Great way to spend an afternoon away from the crowds of Juneau. Enjoyed learning about a "real" Alaska gold mine and its story. The Virtual Reality was a nice touch together with archival photos to really bring the story to life! Great guide, highly recommended!

We (2 adults and our 16 year old) booked this tour looking for something different to do in Juneau. We couldn't have been more pleased with this hidden gem! The augmented reality technology really helped me to appreciate what Treadwell once looked like and how it operated. Katie was a wealth of information about the Treadwell mine and Juneau in general. We were picked up by Ishmael at our ship (despite docking at the AJ doc!) and he was amazing as well. He was very knowledgeable about Juneau and made the short ride over to the old mine site enjoyable. Walking is required, but we found it to be an easy stroll on well-maintained paths. We would happily support this locally owned small business any day!

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up for this activity. I was delighted when our guide, Katie, started leading the tour. Using iPads, the Treadwell Mine was brought to life. Historical photos were overlaid with the current scenery. I first learned of this mine from a Discovery+ show many months ago, and was thrilled to see it in real life.

Wow. What a great tour! Ishmael was an excellent guide and a good soul. He was so knowledgeable and passionate about the story of Treadwell. The augmented reality scenes helped bring the story to life. The beautiful weather only made the experience that much better.

The AI generated moving images on the supplied I pads of what it was like to be gold mining in the late 1800’s really brought the walk to life. Katie had a real passion on describing the local history Thank-you

Fantastic hike and tour of the Treadwell Gold Mines led by knowledgeable friendly folks. Aaron, Travis and Ishmael were timely, courteous and very communicative. Physical experience with AI implementation; we were each given individual tablets with a virtual view of how the sites once were along with real photographs and facts. History, nature and great conversation; definitely recommend.

Excellent visit to abandoned mining town with nature walk and waterfront. Animated views with computers are very good. Travis and Ismaile were excellent with tour and pick up and drop off. Knowledgeable about mining and nature.

Easy walk very knowledgeable guide beautiful setting

Fantastic walking tour with very knowledgeable guides. Aaron was my particular guide who owns the business with his partner Travis. Aaron was fantastic with his knowledge of history. Plus, the tablets that you carry will allow you to experience history in 3-D. Plus, lots of historical photos. I had the pleasure of also walking with Travis, who is also very knowledgeable and a pleasure to talk to. Would highly recommend this tour to anybody!

This was a shore excursion option for a Holland America tour, and the best shore excursion on the entire cruise.We were met at the pier, taken to the parking area on the other side of the harbour (across the bridge), and outfitted with our Ipads for the augmented reality portion of the tour. The augmented reality Ipads are a brilliant solution to the problem of making history really come alive.The walk itself is enjoyable, through quiet rainforest with views back to the Juneau downtown area. I think the overall walk took around two hours. Since the tour company uses minivans to bring people to the site, the group size is automatically restricted to a reasonable number of people. The guide (sorry, can't remember the name) did an excellent job of explaining the history of the mining area and the town that grew up around it.Highly recommended.

As a lifelong Juneauite, I thought I knew the Treadwell story pretty well—but this tour absolutely blew me away. Walking the historic trails with someone who can bring the ruins to life through stories, old photos, and little-known details was incredible. I’ve driven past that area for years without realizing just how much history is tucked into the woods and shoreline.The guide did such a great job weaving together the human side of the mining days—the families, the culture, the sheer scale of what was once the largest gold mine in the world. Standing among the moss-covered foundations and picturing what it looked like 100+ years ago gave me a whole new appreciation for our community’s roots.Even though I’ve lived here my whole life and my own family roots in Alaska stem from the Klondike, I left the tour feeling like I’d discovered something brand new in my own backyard. Whether you’re a visitor or a local, this is hands-down one of the best ways to experience Juneau’s history. I can’t recommend it enough.
