Welcome to Bar Harbor

On Mount Desert Island, among the cluster of islands off the Central Maine coastline where the Penobscot and Union Rivers meet the Atlantic, the village of Bar Harbor was settled in the late 18th century as a fishing port. The island’s rugged maritime scenery soon attracted artists and other visitors, and by 1880 the island hosted 30 hotels and the summer estates of many wealthy Gilded Age families. Bar Harbor’s quaint downtown, Village Green, and historic harbor district are all perfect for strolling or biking. The waters of Frenchman Bay and hills of nearby Acadia National Park offer endless recreation options, including tall ship cruises, kayaking, whale watching, wildlife viewing, hiking, and more.
