Virginia is a southeastern U.S. state that stretches from the Atlantic Coast and Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains in the west. The state’s northeastern corner contains the western suburbs of Washington DC. Virginia has a very rich history. Established in 1607 as the first permanent English colony in the New World, Virginia was one of the Thirteen Colonies and Richmond, the state capital, is one of America’s oldest major cities. The state is renowned for many important Revolutionary and Civil War historic sites. Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s home and plantation is near Charlotte. Virginia offers outdoor activities, beaches, over 30 wineries, and excellent Chesapeake crabs and oysters.
