Our private tour of Fatima was excellent in all respects and we would recommend it very highly. Our guide, Iara, was very informative, personable and she did not rush us at all. Overall for us, as practicing Catholics, it was a deeply meaningful experience.It is a three hour tour and there is considerable walking with some inclines involved so take that into account if you are considering by this tour.

This is a unique experience. The villages are amazing to wander through, and the history provided by Alfredo gave it meaning and context. This was a highlight of my trip to Portugal.

Our guided tour of the Convent of Christ in Tomar with Darren was an outstanding experience. We met him in the town square, and he kindly drove us to the convent.A British guide who has lived in Portugal for 20 years, Darren combines an excellent knowledge of Portuguese history with genuine enthusiasm for the Knights Templar, architecture and the country’s cultural heritage.From the beginning, the tour was informative, engaging and interactive. Darren took us on a fascinating journey through the history of the Knights Templar—from their foundation in the early 12th century in the Holy Land, where they protected pilgrims and supported the Kingdom of Jerusalem, to the order’s suppression in France in the early 14th century.He explained the unusual nature of the Templars as both a religious and military order, and described their humble origins as the “Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ,” represented by the famous symbol of two knights sharing one horse. He also showed how their role in protecting pilgrims led them to develop sophisticated financial services, making them one of Europe’s earliest banking institutions.Darren brought the political and financial circumstances surrounding the Templars’ downfall to life, including the debts owed to them by King Philip IV of France, known as Philip the Fair. He explained how the order was persecuted, tortured and accused of heresy, with several members eventually executed.The Portuguese chapter of the story was particularly compelling. While the Templars were suppressed in France and elsewhere, their military experience and resources remained valuable to Portugal during the Reconquista. King Dinis established the Order of Christ in 1319, allowing much of the Templars’ Portuguese legacy, property and expertise to continue under a new name.Darren also explained the connection between the Order of Christ, Prince Henry the Navigator and Portugal’s Age of Discoveries. The order’s wealth and influence helped support Portugal’s maritime expansion, and its cross became closely associated with Portuguese voyages and exploration.As we explored the convent, Darren went beyond the history of the Templars. He pointed out the complex’s defensive features and explained how it developed over many centuries. He helped us appreciate the mixture of Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Renaissance and later architectural elements, showing how each period left its mark on this extraordinary site. The Convent of Christ and the Castle of Tomar were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.Darren was an excellent guide: knowledgeable, passionate, engaging and approachable. He made the history feel alive and helped us understand the convent not merely as a beautiful monument, but as a place where military history, religion, politics, architecture and Portugal’s maritime ambitions all come together.For English-speaking visitors interested in history, architecture or the Knights Templar, a visit to Tomar is an absolute must. The Convent of Christ is a remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site, and we highly recommend Darren as the perfect guide to uncover its fascinating story.

Awesome history and hiking. Great pick up and communication. The description may be for more than this hike. There was no souvenir photo or professional photographer, but that is not a deal breaker. Alfredo took our photo with our phone. The water in the river is dry without a lot of rain so there might not be a waterfall. 5 stars. Alfredo was soooo informed and genuine.

Darren was a very knowledgeable and passionate guide. His tour was exceptional due to his many years of researching facts versus fiction. His knowledge brings you to the time of the early 12th century where you can almost see the knight and horses in the castle. He only does one tour a day and will spend as much time with you as you would like. Truly a memorable day we will never forget. Thank you again Linda and Scott

Great day with Sérgio. He is knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects. I really enjoyed learning about some of the landscape challenges with invasive species and fire on our drive. The villages are beautiful and we enjoyed exploring them. Like nothing I have seen before. I definitely recommend Sérgio for a super experience.

Monica is amazing and I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time with her. She was very knowledgeable about the Moorish castle and the Schist villages. We visited four villages- two “touristy” but I didn’t think either really were, just one isn’t as authentic because of renovations. The two non touristy ones were very special. Wandering around Mónica picked mushrooms and gave me fruit to eat straight from the trees. She was able to provide the history of the area and point out various construction features. We had a terrific conversation over lunch despite our 45 year age gap. She also provided a history of Portugals dictatorship which was fascinating. I liked how she provided both factual information during our time together and inserted personal stories about her family. You must do this trip and with Monica. She is a very special person.

Alfredo was a great guide and made for a just perfect day. Alfredo has so much energy, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the ancient sites and surrounding areas. This tour is absolutely worth your time and money, and is one of the memorable days that I’ve had in past few years.

Sérgio was a perfect and kind tour guide. He was so knowledgeable about Portuguese history. We toured around the mountainous region and explored the historic villages where goat herders lived for the season. The dwellings were lovely 🥰.

From the very beginning, she made us feel welcome by providing water and a sweet treat to start our journey.Monica was informative, professional, kind, and incredibly personable. Her knowledge of Portuguese history was impressive, and she brought the history and culture of the villages to life in a way that made the experience so much more meaningful.She took us to four different villages. Two had been beautifully restored, with services and lodging available, while the other two remained largely unrestored. Seeing both gave us a fascinating contrast and allowed us to understand how people once lived—and, in some cases, still live—without electricity or running water.One of the highlights was meeting the locals in each village. They were funny, kind, welcoming, and engaging, which made the experience feel authentic rather than simply being a sightseeing tour.We also enjoyed some wonderful unexpected moments along the way—eating grapes right off the vine, picking blackberries, tasting figs and persimmons, and seeing an abundance of chestnut trees, something we rarely see in the United States anymore.Monica didn’t just show us the villages—she gave us a glimpse into the history, culture, people, and everyday life of this beautiful part of Portugal.I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for an authentic, memorable experience away from the typical tourist attractions. First time in Lisbon Portugal and first tour we did was Fatima. Fernando showed up early at our hotel and pick us up to go to Fatima. On the way to Fatima he shared historical facts about Portugal history , Lisbon and Fatima. He also touched a lot of topics , local news , current events and best places to check out from dinning to sight seeing. He also gave us tips where local go and also customs. He made trip very memorable. He is very professional, personable and helps you what ever you need to get around. My family has earned our trust and we made a friend during this trip. We booked this tour last minute during our visit to Coimbra and could not have been more pleased with everything! Alfredo was such a wonderful tour guide.
