Hoonah Travel Guides (Updated September 2026)

My wife and I had an amazing experience with Catch of the Day in Hoonah aboard the Stormbreaker with Captain Dennis and his nephew. With a small group of about 10 people, we got to consistently watch 3–4 whales surface, dive, and slap their tails, and then we were lucky enough to see them breach, which was absolutely incredible and a true core memory. The boat was comfortable, with an enclosed heated cabin that was perfect for the Alaska weather. Captain Dennis and his nephew were friendly and knowledgeable, and we couldn’t have asked for a better whale-watching experience. Highly recommend!

Saw 4 diff whales and got great photos!!! Staff was very personable and shared interesting info and stories about the whales, area, and culture. Excellent experience!

This past August my family of four took a Natventure by boat trip. From start to finish the trip was flawless. Natalie had excellent communication and we were able to follow her instructions on where to meet with no problems. Natalie took us on a short boat ride to an incredibly private location. We took a hike to a stream and practiced our casting techniques. Natalie was so helpful and patient with us as it had been a long time since we had been fishing. Everyone in our family was able to catch fish and we even got to see a mother bear and her cubs fishing a little downstream from us. At the end of the excursion, Natalie made sure to get us back to port on time for us to get back on the cruise ship. My teens both said that the fishing trip was their favorite part of our time in Alaska.

This was one of the highlights of our Alaska trip! We were so lucky to see so many humpback whales during the Hoonah Whale Watching Cruise. There were whales appearing again and again around the boat, and it was such an incredible experience to watch them in their natural environment. We even got to see sea lions too, which was such a fun surprise! 🐋🦭The scenery around Icy Strait Point was beautiful as well, and being out on the water surrounded by Alaska’s amazing landscape made the experience even more special.The crew was friendly, helpful, and clearly knew where to look for the wildlife. Everything was well organized and we felt very comfortable throughout the trip.We had an unforgettable time and would absolutely recommend this tour to anyone visiting Icy Strait Point. Seeing so many whales and sea lions was definitely one of our favorite memories from Alaska! ❤️

The captain took good care of us. We had a last minute need and they were all so accommodating. We saw so many whales!

Our fishing experience with Natventures was the highlight of our trip. Natalie was a perfect companion, especially when a brown bear moved in on us. Our group had complete confidence in Natalie abilities to protect us. We will be back.

Jonah and Neil were excellent tour guides for this adventure. We were able to see humpbacks whales and Orcas! They both were super knowledgeable and really made you feel comfortable asking questions.

This was an amazing tour and both Captain Bob and Naturalist Neil did everything to ensure we had a great experience. Finding the meeting point was easy and they did a great job to make our experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. Highly recommend this tour!!!

We had an amazing time on our kayaking tour! None of us had any experience kayaking before and had no problems whatsoever. The guides were amazing and we saw some a lot of wildlife!

What a wonderful trip...we saw lots of whales. The boat and captain Josh were an excellent choice. From the meetup , the shuttle to the boat and the trip really made the experience A+. Loved every minute of it!

NOT TO BE MISSED This tour was excellent we did the shoreline and came across plenty of whales The captain Tyler was amazing and had loads of family history and has lives local He gambled on going solo and it has deffo paid off, you must do this tour it's only has a maximum of 6 people so you can ask questions take pictures get him to stop etc etc Wonderful trip would deffo go again if I ever get to icy strait again

Good bear guide. Cora grew up in Hoonah and was very skilled, informative and helpful. Saw several bears and learned how to look for brown bears.

They were great! Prompt, pros, and locals!! I highly recommend them. 5 stars for sure!

We had the BEST time!! This family owned and operated group provided an amazing experience! They were easy to find, easy to board and provided so much insight throughout the adventure! They knew what they were doing and allowed us to see so many whales, otters and bears!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!

We had an absolutely wonderful whale-watching adventure! Dave was our guide, and he kept the entire trip lively and fun with his hilarious commentary. He and his family were incredibly gracious hosts and made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived.We were fortunate enough to see a humpback whale, bald eagles, seals, salmon, and even a Dungeness crab! Dave made it a priority to find as much wildlife as possible and clearly put a lot of effort into making sure we had the best experience possible.It was an unforgettable experience, and we would 100% book with them again.
