Welcome to Fort Myers

The community of Fort Myers was founded in 1866 just after the American Civil War and soon began gaining popularity as a warm-weather vacation retreat. Famed for its sport fishing, Fort Myers attracted the attention of inventor and fisherman Thomas Edison, who built a winter home there in 1886. In 1916, Henry Ford purchased the home next to Edison’s, and these two historic estates are today museums and key local attractions. Fresh- and saltwater fishing is still great in Fort Myers, boating and dolphin tours are exciting pastimes, and the city is a gateway to adventuring in the Florida Everglades and playing on the white sand beaches of Sanibel and Estero Islands.
