Nicely organized easy to follow self guided tour

The Pozzo della Cava was a true surprise. I knew it was beautiful, but I never expected to appreciate it even more than the Pozzo di San Patrizio. Built in 1530 on earlier structures, it is not just a well, but a true archaeological complex in the depths of the city. It consists of three underground levels, the central one characterized by seven communicating rooms from different eras, each with its own function. It is very interesting to understand the origins of Orvieto's ceramic art, with the ancient kilns for firing, the pits for discarding poorly made items, the ancient furnaces, and the third firing chamber, called Muffola, made of concrete and tuff blocks. Even more impressive are the last two rooms, used as tuff quarries, where the blocks for the construction of the above residential structures were extracted. You can see the rough walls and the holes where wedges were inserted to prepare the dimensions of the tuff blocks to be extracted, ultimately leading to the room used as a necropolis. What can I say, a true journey through time and history, which I recommend not to miss when visiting Orvieto.

I didn t know this complex existed. Yet we often come to Orvieto. A wonder that cannot be described. You have to see her. Mr. Marco a well, it must be said, of culture. It's beautiful.

A unique and interesting thing to see, and makes you wonder how they could do this with hand tools. It is very well preserved and offers good picture taking opportunities.

Walking thru here was excellent. It doesn't take too long and IMO if your in Orvieto, this is worth it.

This is a shorter self guided tour. My husband found it interesting. I didn’t as much. Staff was friendly and they had a nice courtyard at the end. There was food available but it was closed when we visited.

Interesting guided tour with knowledgeable tour guide Anastasia. The caves and their history are magnificent and the remnants of what once was are amazing. We didn’t enter the second cave since there were 50 steep steps to decline and then go up.

Most interesting place. It’s certainly worth the visit also with kids interested in history. Even if not famous like St Patrick well, I think it’s more interesting

Really enjoyed this step back in time to explore the caves and learn about their uses and the history unearthed in them. Beautiful range of ceramics available in their shop.

Very nice, clear route and brochures representing well arranged explanations. The only thing I have to object to was that the operator did not tell us about the ticket reduction having already visited St. Patrick's well and we paid the full price. When we pointed it out, he could at least give us back the difference.

Very interesting visit to a place that has been used for centuries, for many uses whose trace is particularly well explained in the context of a very educational path, with explanatory signs including in French. Furthermore, possibility to eat in a nice setting.

We visited the Well during the Christmas period and therefore we could enjoy the visit to the Well Nativity, which was set up inside the basements, creating a real exciting path that tells of the birth of Jesus in a non-traditional version, with an exclusive point of view. The interesting thing is that every year a different type of Nativity scene is proposed, always guaranteeing an innovative offer for tourists. This arrangement has enriched an already impressive underground attraction, which is worth visiting.

The history behind Orvieto is fascinating. Very knowledgeable guide. Well worth the money. If you are claustrophobic don’t go!

Small well with basements, pleasant to visit in about twenty minutes, to immerse yourself in the life of Orvieto bygone times.

Outstanding, admission is more than fair. Nice activity not too long. Never seen anything like that. Easy to approach from the foniculor.

Visited only from outside, while husband and son went down with the guided tour thoroughly; not comparable to that of St. Patrick but still very beautiful, there is a well-made nativity scene visible even from above, many exhibits.
