Overview
Water cascades into this narrow canyon in the heat of summer, but in the winter the thundering falls freeze solid to create natural ice sculptures. Johnston Canyon is one of the most popular attractions in Banff National Park and has a network of steel catwalks built into the canyon walls that allows you to walk right along this cathedral of ice with airy views into the gorge below.
As you do, you’ll get to wander through a natural cave to gaze down at the flowering waters of the lower falls. Continue onto the awe-inducing upper falls - a glittering tower of ice that rise 30 metres above your head. These gigantic pillars of ice are the tour highlight and ice climbers can often be seen scaling the frozen columns.
This popular guided icewalk will lead you past the lower falls and on to view the breathtaking upper icefalls from the upper deck. You will also travel through prime wildlife habitat to reach the falls and learn the clues to how Johnston Canyon was formed.

We had a private hiking tour with Heidi for the Johnston Canyon Ice walk this morning. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our time with Heidi from the moment she greeted us at pick up to drop off. Her enthusiasm for nature was contagious and knowledge of the canyon and it's environment was an incredible learning experience. My family of 4 (2 boys ages 9 and 11) really loved this experience! We went Easter weekend and the weather was perfect. The Canyon is beautiful and the ice cleats were definately needed in mid-April. Tyler was a great guide with lots of knowledge about the area. My boys especially loved his stories! The hot chocolate at the end point of the hike was an added bonus! Thanks Tyler for making this family memory one that we will always cherish!

Excellent tour with a kind and energetic and brilliant guide - Erin. Learned so much and had fun. Bus ride was non stop learning too! Totally worth paying for the guided tour. Don’t do this walk without ice cleats!

Everything about this was great. Heidi, our guide, was friendly, funny and super knowledgeable about not only the hike, but all things Banff. I would definitely recommend the hike. Go in the morning as it seemed to get crowded around lunchtime.

Excellent hike at the right strenuous level. Our group of 14 did well to keep the pace up and stay together. Heidi was extremely knowledgeable about the area, history, geological changes in the rocks, and she was positively friendly and upbeat.

Anick, our guide, was simply amazing. Book this tour, you won't regret it.The tour itself was an excellent choice and we went from slightly dreading it to enjoying it immensely. Listen to the emails that you get about this hike; you would do well to heed the advice of wearing a thick jacket as the canyon is cold during the winter with ice and snow. But, it's beautiful. The guide provides a walking pole, ice cleats, maple cookies, and hot chocolate. Apart from the scenery, the guide is what makes this tour so special. From the history of the canyon, to the knowledge she shared about Canada, Banff, Canmore, and more, Anick was a walking encyclopedia! We threw every question at her, from the woodpecker she had on her backpack, to the best restaurants in the area. She answered every question stunningly. Oh, and to top it all off, she's a great photographer, so if you need those TikTok videos of those Instagram posts, don't worry, Anick has you covered. In summary, it was a beautiful hike through a stunning canyon with the very best guide we could ask for; we were blown away at the quality of this tour.Anick, if you read this, you were amazing!
