Michigan, in America’s Upper Midwest/Great Lakes region, has coastlines on the Great Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, and Erie. It is comprised by two peninsulas and has the longest freshwater coastline of any state or province in the world. The largest city, Detroit, is the historic center of the U.S. automotive industry. Several botanical gardens including the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory feature everything from sculpture gardens to tropical birds and desert cactuses. Maritime history abounds, with 129 historic lighthouses to see. Beaches, fishing and watersports are also top attractions. Several scenic byways offer excellent views over the Lake Michigan and Lake Huron shorelines.
