Bangor

Welcome to Bangor

Bangor, located on the western bank the Penobscot River near the Central Maine coast, is the state’s third-largest city and a gateway to the Northern Maine wilderness, the scenic coastline, and the lush farm country. Bangor was established as a mid-19th century lumber mill and ship building center. Logs were floated down the river, then milled into lumber that was shipped to the Atlantic port 30 miles downstream in Penobscot Bay. This economic history is visible in the opulent brick and wood mansions built by the Bangor lumber barons. The historic downtown is full of shops, boutiques, and restaurants, while just north of town, the City Forest features hiking trails and native wildlife.
