Our guide, Guytono, was OUTSTANDING! He was professional, knowledgeable, funny, totally engaged with everyone, in tune with the best timing for each stop, and careful to find shade as much as possible! We strongly recommend doing this walking tour. The history of Matera makes the entire city so much more than just the architecture that you see walking around. We enjoyed our entire tour! The walking was definitely doable so don’t worry that it will be too much. You do need good shoes, not sandals! The cobble stone streets are not flush and the stones can be slick. Book this tour and this guide! You will not be disappointed.

Great tour! So glad I went. The guide, Terri (Terry?) was excellent. So knowledgeable and funny and answered our questions and gave us little tidbits and trivia and history. Really fun. There were many people in the touristy piazza that one would think that was the only place to go; however, this tour takes you around the perimeter of the Sassi, plus some interiors, but it really gives you a good sense of the size and scope and beauty of the area. Plus, you get to see the hidden restaurant gems, the small shops, the museums. I took note of interesting, non-touristy looking restaurants and came back later for dinner. I highly recommend Lucany restaurant! Again, this tour was definitely worth it.

It was a very educational tour. We learned a lot about life in the sassi in the old times, the transformation in the 20th century, the importance of the cisterns, the water collection and the UNESCO recognition. We visited one crypt and one house and did a tour in Sasso Caveoso. It is good to start visiting the city with such a tour thus you are better oriented about the site, know what to visit afterwards on your own and where to spend more time. Alessia, our guide, was excellent. We recommend.

Our guide Juisy was absolutely fantastic. It was like going on a walking tour with our own personal history professor. We loved learning the history of Matera and the Stassi. It was a lot of walking but even more knowledge was gained. A must if you visit Matera.

Stella was an awesome guide. Welcoming and friendly when we met. Spoke good English. Most importantly her knowledge and passion for Matera and the Sassi was impressive. As a result we learned fascinating facts and insights we would otherwise not have learned. The tour was well paced especially given the extreme heat. Stella’s recommendation for lunch was perfect and we also enjoyed checking out the old water system she recommended we see. We highly recommend this tour.
