Welcome to Steamboat Springs

Steamboat Springs is a Colorado ski resort town about 3 hours northwest of Denver. Natural hot springs occur throughout the area, and the town was named when early trappers heard a steamboat-like chugging coming from a spring near the Yampa River. The Old Town Spring now feeds swimming and soaking pools in a fitness center and waterpark complex. Originally a ranching and mining area first settled by Europeans in 1874, skiing in America was born when Norwegian resident Carl Howelsen built a ski jump in 1913. The Howelsen Ski Area is North America’s oldest operating ski area. Much larger Steanmboat Ski Resort offers 18 lifts and 169 runs as well as many summer activities.
