Welcome to Providence

Providence is the capital of the small Atlantic Coast state of Rhode Island, an area that was one of America’s original Thirteen Colonies. Situated along the mouth of the Providence River at the head of Narragansett Bay, Providence was founded in 1636 and is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. Home to Brown University since 1770 as well as historic sites like The Providence Athenæum, fourth oldest library in the United States and haunt of Edgar Allan Poe, Providence is a good city for walking tours and river cruises. It is also a departure point for day trips to the resort island of Martha’s Vineyard, the port city of Newport, home to the America’s Cup yacht race, or even north to Boston.
