Welcome to McCarthy

McCarthy Alaska is a tiny mountain wilderness village of about 30 people located 90 miles from the Edgerton Highway turnoff on the Richardson Highway. Five miles away is the ghost town of the early 20th-century Kennicott copper mining operation. McCarthy was built as an entertainment spot for the miners since the company town at the mine did not allow drinking, gambling, or prostitution. Today, McCarthy gets summer travelers who visit Kennicott, hike on the area’s many glaciers, and enjoy pristine wilderness in the surrounding Wrangell St. Elias National Park. It is the largest U.S. national park and McCarthy is the last remaining remote community of individuals inside a National Park.
