Welcome to Indianapolis

Indianapolis, or Indy, is Indiana’s state capital and largest city. Founded in 1821 on the banks of the White River, and a major 19th-century railroad and industrial city, modern Indianapolis is famous as home to the world’s largest single-day sporting event: the Indianapolis 500. This annual 500-mile automobile race has run at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1911. Come for one of many yearly racing events and explore the city on a scavenger hunt or walking tour, see the 284-foot-tall Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument at Monument Circle, visit Fountain Square, the renovated 1860s-vintage commercial corridor bustling with unique restaurants and trendy art galleries, or even learn to make Japanese food.
