Welcome to Eugene

In 1846, Eugene Franklin Skinner arrived in Oregon’s upper Willamette Valley and built a cabin on the slope of an isolated hill overlooking the Willamette River. The cabin formed the heart of a settlement called Skinner’s Mudhole, renamed Eugene in 1889. The hill became known as Skinner’s Butte. Defined by two rivers and many forested hills, Eugene is known for running, hiking, bicycling, rafting, and kayaking. Craft breweries, culinary delights, eclectic shopping, and green spaces abound in the city. Eugene lies in the heart of Oregon’s Wine Country, within close reach of the scenic Oregon Coast, Crater Lake, and outdoor recreation opportunities in the foothills of the Cascades.
