Unforgettable experience with a passionate guide!
We had an absolutely wonderful time on our guided tour of the Convento de Cristo with Monica! She was incredibly informative and shared so much fascinating history with us. What truly set this tour apart, though, was Monica’s deep, obvious connection and passion for the history of her country. It made the entire experience feel so much more meaningful. We really enjoyed ourselves and learned so much more than if we had just wandered through the Convent on our own. Booking this tour was well worth it, and we highly recommend Monica to anyone visiting Tomar!

★★★★★ Darren Keohane made the Templars come alive for us
We've been reading about the Knights Templar for years, but nothing prepared my wife Carol and me for what it felt like to actually stand inside the Charola with Darren Keohane as our guide. That moment — walking into the sixteen-sided rotunda, modeled on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, surrounded by faded frescoes and gilded statuary glowing under the Byzantine dome — is one Carol and I still talk about. Darren didn't just tell us what we were looking at; he made us feel why the Templars built it that way, what it meant to stand where Grand Masters once stood eight hundred years ago. There's a difference between visiting a monument and understanding it, and Darren closes that gap completely. What struck us most was how much Darren genuinely loves this history. It isn't a rehearsed script for him — you can tell within minutes that this is a man who has spent years digging into the Templars, the Order of Christ, and the layers of myth and fact that surround Tomar, and he can't wait to share it. He has this incredible gift for stopping mid-stride to point out something we absolutely would have walked right past — a carved symbol tucked into a column, the way a particular fresco was positioned to catch the light, a tiny architectural detail in the Manueline stonework that reveals a whole story about the Order's wealth and ambition. Time and time again, he'd say "look closer at this" and open up a detail that turned a beautiful room into something profound.Carol and I have taken plenty of guided tours over the years, and this was different. Darren's passion is contagious, his knowledge is genuinely deep rather than surface-level tourist trivia, and he has a warmth and humor that made the whole day feel like exploring history with a knowledgeable friend rather than sitting through a lecture. By the time we left the Charola, we understood not just the "what" of the Templars in Tomar, but the "why" — and that's rare.If you're even remotely curious about the Knights Templar, do not see Tomar without Darren. It will completely change how you experience the Convent of Christ.— Wayne and Carol

A must do tour with Fernando
Fascinating, Fantastic, and incredibly educational. Our guide, Fernando, knew so much, answered all our questions, and filled surprising holes in our understanding of the Age of Discovery, the history of Portugal, and the traditions of religion and government. What an experience! Fernando is fantastic!

Ottimo tour guidato con Mónica
Thanks to Mónica, we learnt lots of interesting facts about Tomar, its traditions, its most iconic sites and the history of the Knights Templar. Mónica is an expert guide with a deep knowledge of the history of Tomar and Portugal. Her explanations are very clear (even in English) and she’s also brilliant at engaging the children during her guided tours. Highly recommended!

A can’t miss tour!
Extremely knowledgeable guide! Fernando was an excellent tour guide! I can’t recommend this tour more highly. It is the only way to see the Convent of Christ.

Fatima was the highlight...
Fatima was the highlight of our day, but it was also a great way to see Nazare and Bathala as part of the same trip. The guide was excellent and gave lots of wonderful information about the trip, Coimbra & surrounding areas.

Spectacular Views and Incredible History from an Expert
If you are interested in the history and diverse culture of Coimbra, this is a "can't miss". Bruno is an easy going and incredibly knowledgeable guide (History degree from University of Coimbra). The views are spectacular from the top of the city and I learned so much about the history: the good and not so good. I highly recommend this tour with Bruno.

Great medieval history tour and charming town
Great tour of smaller town with huge history. Despite not being able to see castle due to reconstruction, the town itself and monastery were well worth the visit. Great explanation of how Knights Templar become Order of Christ and led to Portugal’s age of discovery.

Ambitious Itinerary Made Easy 😁
Sara was fantastic: enthusiastic, explained the history well, and made sure we appreciated the details that made each site special. The pace was perfect. We were very pleased with our day, especially with so much information to fit in, and such an ambitious itinerary, but she made it easy.

Walking through the past of Tomar
Had a great day with Monica who is really pulling out all the stops for the best experience. As a true local, she knows Tomar like the back of her hand and as a graduate historian she knows every symbol you ask a question about. If you're still hesitating between an audio tour and this tour, don't hesitate any longer, it's worth it!

Cycling Ecopista of Vouga, full-day from CoimbraTeamScotia, May 2026
The scenery and the biking is spectacular!
This bike tour was one of the highlights of our vacation in Portugal. First of all, the scenery and the biking is spectacular and lived up to the descriptions: the ecopista goes along vineyards, farm land, historic villages, forests, crossing old stone-arch bridges, through small towns and tunnels, with many hilltop and river valley look-offs; paved, gravel, cobble and clay trails. Lots of variety. We found this ecopista through the Viaje Portugal website. Xavier is awesome! (A knowledgeable, friendly host, prompt, and a good communicator). We (2 of us) cycled the ecopista on our own, with Xavier providing logistic/vehicle support as needed throughout the day and he took some great photos of us along the way. Would highly recommend this Viaje bike tour.
Great memories. Thanks Xavier!
