Biloxi Mississippi is a small Gulf Coast city that has been as summer beach resort since the antebellum period of the 19th century. The area played roles in the 17th century French settlement of Louisiana, and emerged as an important shrimp and seafood port and processing center as well as a popular vacation spot in the years after the Civil War. Period history in the city includes Beauvoir, completed in 1852 and the last home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, now a museum with a view of the Mississippi Sound. The 1849 Biloxi Lighthouse, world-class casinos, beautiful beaches protected by barrier islands, several museums, and offshore fishing and shrimping trips are a few Biloxi attractions.
