Budapest Self-Guided City Walking Tour & Scavenger Hunt
Overview
Budapest's Jewish Quarter survived the 20th century, turned a ruin into the world's most imitated bar, and is still the most surprising neighbourhood in the city.
This app-led scavenger hunt takes you through Budapest's Jewish Quarter on foot, using phone-based riddles to guide you from one landmark to the next. No guide, no fixed start time.
• Follow clues to the Dohany Street Synagogue, Gozsdu Udvar, and Szimpla Ruin Pub — three landmarks that take you from Europe's largest synagogue to the bar that started a global trend
• Start whenever suits you and take all the time you need — no time limit, no pressure
• Works for friend groups, curious travellers, and anyone with an interest in the neighbourhood's layered history; photo challenges guarantee some memorable shots
Around 2 hours, any group size, available in English and French.
The ruin bar idea started here — your phone has the story of what came before it.

What To Expect
Starting at Deák Ferenc tér in central Budapest, enter your 6-digit game code that you received by text and Viator chat message into the free Explorial app and begin a self-guided trail through the city's vibrant Jewish Quarter.
At the Dohany Street Synagogue — the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world — challenges explore the Byzantine-Moorish architecture, the stories of the Budapest Jewish community, and the memorial garden behind it.
The trail moves through Gozsdu Udvar, a series of seven interconnected courtyards built in 1904 and stretching nearly 200 metres between two streets, where riddles probe the passage's history as a Jewish trading quarter and its transformation into a nightlife hub.
At Szimpla Ruin Pub, the original ruin bar that pioneered a concept now copied in cities worldwide — taking a crumbling pre-war building and filling it with mismatched furniture, murals, and music — you'll tackle questions about the movement it sparked and the neighbourhood it helped regenerate.
The trail takes around two hours at a comfortable pace, with no guide and no fixed schedule.
