A private proposal experience that felt like it was written just for us
We traveled to Hvar from Argentina with one very specific goal: I wanted to propose to my girlfriend somewhere unforgettable, without anything feeling forced or overly staged. After some research, we reached out to Natural Hvar Tours, a small family-run company, and from the very first email exchange with Grgo and Silvana, we knew we'd found the right people — they had helped organize similar proposals in past summers, and every one of those couples had gone on to get married.
The day itself was structured as a completely private sightseeing tour, which is exactly what made it feel natural rather than choreographed. Our guide, Grgo, picked us up in a comfortable Mercedes V-Class and drove us through Malo Grablje, Velo Grablje and Jelsa, sharing local history and stories well beyond what you'd get on a standard group tour. Around three hours in, we switched to a smaller car suited for a steep, unpaved mountain road, and made our way up to one of the highest points on the island.
What made this stand out from any other guided tour we've done wasn't just the logistics — it was the way Grgo talked about Hvar. You could feel he wasn't just filling time with facts; he was trying to hand us something more personal: a sense of generations of his own family having lived on this island, of traditions and a sense of community that still shape daily life in these hillside villages. He spoke about the island less like a guide reciting a script and more like someone introducing us to a place he genuinely loves and belongs to. That alone, separate from everything else, is a reason we'd recommend this experience.
What we found there was extraordinary: a table set with a crochet tablecloth, local wines (Plavac, Bogdanjuša, and a rosé), sparkling wine on ice, dried fruits, traditional sweets, and two handmade cookies iced with our exact date. Grgo gave us total privacy — stepping away under the pretext of “turning the car around” — and left us completely alone with one of the most striking views we've ever seen, in near-total silence, for the proposal itself.
The evening continued with a private, three-course dinner inside the family's own 350-year-old stone house — cured meats and cheese, a slow-cooked pašticada with homemade long gnocchi, and a biscuit-based cheesecake, all paired with unlimited wine from their own cellar. As a final touch, they surprised us with two personalized bottles of wine featuring our photo on the label, meant to be opened with family back home.
A few points worth noting for anyone planning something similar: communication was handled entirely over WhatsApp and email, which made coordinating everything from abroad simple and stress-free; payment was processed securely online in advance; and the whole day, from pickup to drop-off, ran for roughly five hours. The complete private experience (for two people) was priced at €540, which we felt was excellent value given the level of personalization, the private transportation, the guide, the setup at the viewpoint, and the full dinner included.
If you're considering Hvar for a proposal, an anniversary, or simply want a private, authentic day on the island away from the typical tourist track, we can't recommend Natural Hvar Tours highly enough. This wasn't a generic “romantic package” — it was a thoughtfully built experience from a family that clearly takes pride in sharing their island, their traditions and their home. Beyond the flawless organization and the surprise itself, it's that sense of being let into a real, generational story of the island that makes this stand out from any other tour we've done. Five stars, without hesitation.
