There are multiple surf schools side by side on this beach and they all charge roughly the same price for roughly the same services. I choose Cabarete Surf Company over the other options and I think I choose correctly. The staff spoke clear English and appeared more customer satisfaction focused than profit focused. I showed up without an appointment and while they were willing to take me on at that time, they advised the conditions would not be good for a novice and that I should come back in the morning (low tide) if my schedule could accommodate. One thing that set their school apart from the others is their land lesson was on a rope suspended board. Others used a real surfboard stably lying on the sand. The suspended plank simulates the balance/ocean conditions better (and is probably a bit harder than the real thing). This shifts more of the learning curve to the land lesson (faster learning, less exhausting, easier to iterate on feedback). I have experience with other board sports and was able to pick this up quickly. I was even able to film myself. I had a bunch of fun and wouldn't change anything in hindsight.

We loved this. It’s definitely absolute beginner, which was perfect for us first-timers! Nice intro/practice sesh on the beach and then we moved into the water! Our teacher would take turns with each of us, holding onto your board while looking for a good wave, and then push you/tell you when to paddle etc. And then we had about 30ish mins for “free swim.” We ended up figuring out how to “ride” some of the smaller waves that were breaking closer to shore - fun! And good practice. :) It rained while we were out which was actually really beautiful and helped the waves! But, it was a pretty calm day..small waves and they weren’t super frequent. We definitely spent a lot of time wading and waiting. No biggie! It’s part of it. BUT, we’d just suggest looking into the current surfing conditions once you get to PR, and book for a day that looks to have some stronger waves. From what we read, this beach is already not known for super crazy water. But we made friends w/ the others in our group, learned something new and seriously had a blast!

Super fun and educational beginner surf lesson! I’ve never surfed before and my husband has only tried it once or twice, so it was a perfect level to try. The board offered were bigger and cushioned so it was easier to balance on. Our instructor gave detailed explanations and advised where we should watch out for the rip currents. I managed to get up and stand a lot which was so fun! Definitely planning to book another lesson next time we’re visiting family as I really want to get better.

Best excursion of our vacation
My 16 year old and 11 year old did a group lesson and my husband and I went along as spectators. There were four people in the water with my kids- 3 instructors and a photographer. They were incredibly patient, made sure the kids had fun and helped them catch lots of waves. The location is gorgeous! Our favorite beach of the trip. This is a great value and we brought home some fantastic memories.

They had my son and I surfing in minutes. Never tried before and they had us going right away! Progressively doing harder and more advanced maneuvering until we were ready to be on our own. We had the best time ever during our surf lesson with Axe. From the moment we arrived at the surf shop, everyone was so friendly and welcoming and Axe drove us to the beach in his truck after getting the right boards for everyone. The conditions were perfect for beginners and our family absolutely loved it. Axe gave the right amount of instruction and we all rode several waves. My daughters are begging to go back. Hands down the most fun we’ve had in a long time! Thank you Axe for the best experience. Highly recommend.

Awesome lesson! The team was great! They were efficient with our time and the 2 hours in the water was more than enough, they wore us out! The equipment was great and everything provided was clean. They allowed us to store personal belongings in the surf shack which was a huge help for the morning. The team was friendly and had us catching waves in no time.

We had an absolutely fantastic wing foiling experience, and a huge part of that was thanks to Mowgli. I took lessons together with my daughter, and he went far beyond what we expected from an instructor.Mowgli was incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and encouraging throughout the entire process. He adapted his teaching style to each of us individually, making sure we were both comfortable, safe, and progressing at our own pace. His passion for wing foiling is contagious, and he has a unique ability to build confidence while keeping the experience fun and exciting.What impressed me most was how much he genuinely cared about our success and enjoyment. He consistently went above and beyond—spending extra time explaining techniques, providing personalized feedback, and making sure we got the most out of every session.Thanks to Mowgli, my daughter and I not only learned a new sport but also shared an unforgettable experience together. We had Christina who was a wonderful instructor, very knowledgeable and patient. She helped us catch lots of waves!!! It is a pretty physically grueling swimming out into the surf so make sure to be well rested and hydrated. It was an absolute blast and we would definitely do it again!!!
