Maramures County 2026 Calendar of Events

We had a three day tour with Ioanna focused on hiking and local culture. She planned and navigated three wonderful personalised hikes for us, showing and explaining so much about Maramures as we went: history, geography, folklore, customs and religion, arts and crafts. Ioanna is so knowledgeable and with such an infectious enthusiasm and warmth. An essential part of any trip to the Maramures!

I am a traveller with a particular interest in local hand made arts and crafts, and Ioana did not disappoint with our guided tour today. She is super friendly and easy to talk to, and we had a really lovely time together, looking at beautiful textiles, ceramics and wood work, talking to the artisans and understanding their craft. It was super interesting. And we shared a lovely home cooked meal by Liliana in her beautiful private home too. Wish I have more time in Maramures! Thank you Ioana!

Florian was a great guide! We had a difficult time finding tours for the Maramures. I was so happy when I found this tour. He knows all of the great places to go, was a great driver and very friendly! It was a pleasure to spend the day with him. Don’t hesitate to book!!

We had a truly exceptional day with Teo—far more than a typical tour, this felt like rare, behind-the-scenes access to life in Maramureș. From the very beginning around Sighetu, where we visited the Elie Wiesel House and the former prison, it was clear that Teo offers something special: not just information, but deep context, personal stories, and meaningful connections.Our journey continued to the Merry Cemetery, and then into the countryside, where the experience became even more unique. We visited a stunning wooden church, a working fulling mill, and the village of Breb—places we likely never would have discovered, or fully understood, on our own. Along the way, we learned about everything from modern politics to life under communism, local traditions, and even how storks build their enormous nests.What sets Teo apart is not only his depth of knowledge, but the relationships he has built within the community. Thanks to his trust and familiarity, we met incredible people and heard firsthand stories that brought Maramureș vividly to life. His openness and willingness to answer every question made the day feel personal, immersive, and unforgettable.If you are visiting Maramureș, spending at least a full day with Teo is essential—this is not just a tour, but an experience that transforms how you understand the region.

This was one of the best tours we took in our 4 weeks in Europe. Ioana was very personable, friendly and was a wealth of knowledge. She shared many insights not only about things on the tour but living in Romania as well. Our lunch was fantastic at a local inn. I don't have enough positive adjectives in my vocabulary to describe how great this tour was. Merry Cemetery was so unique and we even got to meet the family who creates to tombstone.

What an amazing tour! We covered so much in 1 day. Teo was knowledgeable and passionate about the Maramureş, which is truly unique. Being a local he was able to take us places that we would never have known about. This was one of the highlights of our trip to Romania.

Great place but what they really need is people who speak English. I found very few people spoke English there which I was surprised.

We had three great days in Maramures with Ioana. She was incredibly patient with our four kids and tailored the tour to meet their needs. When we spontaneously asked if we could take a quick trip over the border to Ukraine, she even accompanied us! Highly recommended!

Susan and I had a 6 day private tour of the magical Maramureș region with Ioana, which turned out to be the soul of our trip. Ioana brings a beautiful warmth and intimacy to her tours. Because of the close, respectful relationships she shares with the local artisans, weavers, and families, we were welcomed into traditional homes not as tourists, but as dear friends. Driving through the rolling hills and villages with Ioana felt like traveling with family.Ioana is a gifted guide and now our friend.

Florien was a good guide to the area. We visited two wooden churches from the 17th and 18th centuries, the Merry Cemetery, a working mill, a newer large monastery complex from the 90s, and I learned quite a bit from him over our 5-6 hours together. I highly recommend his tour, you’re in good hands with Florien.

We had a family summer camp organised by Radu and his colleagues and as part of the activities, he showed us the best landmarks of Maramureș region with visits to the merry cemetery, a walk in the forest around the village of Breb and some artisans from the community. The explanations were really beautiful and adapted for both children and adults. He also took us to a local restaurant and we had a lovely lunch - our kids loved the soup! We definitely recommend this tour and their services if you want to experience the authentic rural Maramureș!

Good tour. The guide picked us up at the hostel and adapted the explanations to the hostel's buildings. He provided an introduction for the area to link the different spots to visit. He also knew very locals who showed us how they live and work. No much walking and also responded to all our questions. He also has good english. All in all, good experience!

My tour of Maramureș with Florin was an absolute highlight of our trip. From the moment I met him (he provided a transfer from the airport in Baia Mare) it was clear I was the hands of someone who not only knows the region inside and out, but also deeply loves its history, culture, and people.Florin was warm, welcoming, and incredibly knowledgeable. He tailored the experience to my interests, sharing insights into local traditions, architecture, and daily life that you simply wouldn’t get from a guidebook. His storytelling brought the region’s rich heritage to life in a way that was both informative and deeply personal.I was lucky to be invited to stop at his home, a pensione, to enjoy a delicious light lunch prepared by his wife.Whether we were exploring wooden churches, meeting local craftspeople, or hearing stories passed down through generations, Florin made every moment feel special and genuine. If you want to truly experience the heart of Maramureș, I can’t recommend Florin highly enough.

Maramures Tours was easily the best part of our trip to Romania. Teo was one of the most memorable tour guides we've ever had and took our trip to Romania from great to unforgettable. His passion, knowledge and love for the region were what sets him apart from other guides.We had only a short time in Maramures and Teo helped build a custom tour for two days. We started with the Memorial to the Victims of Communism and then saw all the the Merry Cemetery and the wooden church in Calinesti. But the part of the tour that was really unique was visiting the local people in Maramures. It showed us what a unique part of the world Maramures was. With Teo we felt welcomed into people's homes to see a part of their culture.Maramures was difficult to get to from Brasov or Bucharest but it was worth it! We were initially worried about safety being close to the border of Ukraine but felt totally safe. We would recommend this tour to anyone! It is absolutely worth the travel there or extending your time in Romania to fit it in.
