Four hours southwest of Washington DC in the heart of the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains, Roanoke Virginia spreads along the Roanoke River Valley. The colonial-era settlement grew around a Native American trail hub area that became part of the Great Wagon Road, the primary route for early settlers in the Southern U.S. Roanoke’s thriving historic downtown area features a lively food scene, a year-round farmers’ market, an aquarium, several museums, and many other landmark attractions. One of the town’s most famous sights is the neon-lit Roanoke Star, the world’s largest man-made freestanding illuminated star, erected in 1949 on Mill Mountain overlooking town in 568-acre Mill Mountain Park.
