You won’t want to miss the Old Jail, built in 1891 and operated until 1953 as the St. Johns County Jail. Construction was financed by Henry Flagler, Standard Oil founder and Florida East Coast Railway magnate.
Flagler needed to move the existing jail to make room for construction of his Ponce de León Hotel so he paid for a new jail to be built. The Old Jail building was designed to look like a fine hotel and is a great example of 19th century Romanesque Revival architecture.
Enjoy a tour of the Old Jail led by professional guides and historical re-enactors. You will see the cells built to house up to 72 prisoners but often crowded with many more.
Explore the Old Jail Museum and tour the living quarters built for deputies. Visit male and female cells, as well as the maximum security death-row cells where 8 men spent their last days before meeting death on the Jail’s dreaded gallows.
View an extensive display of antique weapons and listen to tales of the gruesome crime and brutal punishment that were features of life on America’s Southeastern frontier. You will come away with a vivid picture of the lives of those on both sides of the law in old-time St. Augustine.
The Old Jail was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. It has been featured on the Today Show, the Travel Channel, and the SyFy Channel. The Old Jail is also listed on the Florida and National Register of Haunted Places, so beware the ghosts of the many who died in misery within the walls.
