Get an intimate look at the land and water features that have given San Diego such an important place in maritime history and industry. The San Diego SEAL Amphibious Tour is a fun and exciting adventure and great sight-seeing opportunity. It is also an informative exploration of the bay and sheltered anchorage that has attracted sea farers since Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo discovered San Diego Bay in 1542.

The SEAL Amphibious Tour gives visitors a 90-minute, fully-narrated look at the historic maritime heart of San Diego – The 14-mile long bay that has provided sustenance to Native Americans, anchorage to Spanish explorers, safe harbor and an operations center for the US Navy, home port for the American tuna fishing fleet and canning industry, and a playground for modern yachtsmen. On land and sea, a safe, comfortable ride in an amazing Hydra Terra amphibious bus will carry you to dozens of San Diego’s most interesting features on a tour that you will never forget.

Tour Details & Attractions
This reservations-only tour departs from the Broadway Pier on Harbor Drive in the San Diego Embarcadero, with check-in beginning 30 minutes before tour time. Starting out northbound along the bayside by land, your guide will offer a look at the history of the bay and the early fishing industry that thrived along the waterfront.

You will pass the San Diego International Airport, an unusual city-center airport dedicated to pioneer aviator Charles Lindbergh. Adjacent to the airport on the bayside is the US Coast Guard Sector San Diego, commissioned in 1937 as the only Coast Guard station in California at the time.

After passing Spanish Landing Park, a site commemorating the early explorers’ anchorages off the mission settlement that grew into Old San Diego, the tour reaches Shelter Island, home of exclusive marinas and yacht clubs. This is where the tour takes to the water with a splash to venture out into the busy North Bay waters between Point Loma and Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado.

Graceful sailing craft, US Navy ships, California Brown Pelicans and other seabirds, and maybe even a sea lion or seal are sights to look out for on your aquatic tour. You will have unmatched views of the Point Loma waterfront, Cabrillo National Monument, Naval Air Station North Island, the Point Loma Submarine Base, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Navy’s marine mammal training center.

Coming back ashore at Shelter Island, your tour goes switches to dry land and returns to the start via Harbor Drive, passing the Maritime Museum, the Cruise Ship Terminal, and the USS Midway Museum along the way.

A One-A-Kind Tour
While you might be lucky enough to spot a seal out in San Diego Bay or along the marinas, the most common encounters are with California sea lions. The name SEAL is an acronym for this “Sea And Land” adventure tour and the vehicle that makes it possible. The San Diego SEAL tour fleet features 8 of these amazing amphibious vehicles, all custom-manufactured for tourism use.

Thrilling but completely safe, the Hydra Terra amphibious vehicles used on this tour are fully approved by the US Coast Guard and meet all required Department of Transportation passenger vessel regulations. They are designed and manufactured by a South Carolina company and are in operation in 27 countries around the world. In fact, because they are equipped with foam-filled positive-buoyancy compartments, these vehicles are unsinkable.

Reserve your spot on this incredible tour of San Diego Bay now and prepare for the highlight of your San Diego visit!

(Note: The SEAL Tour is not wheel-chair accessible from Embarcadero.)
