One of the main attractions at Pua'a Ka'a is the picturesque waterfall and natural pool. This stunning beach, located on the eastern coast of Maui, is a result of the gradual erosion of volcanic materials, which has created sand that is black in color. As you explore the beach, you'll be mesmerized by the contrast between the dark sand and the crystal-clear waters of the Pacific Ocean. The high mineral content of the black sand also gives it a subtle sparkle, making it a breathtaking sight.

As a visitor to the area, you'll be awestruck by the majestic Ke'anae Peninsula. This impressive finger of newer lava stretches out from the Hana Highway's cliff line for half a mile. Even before reaching the turnout, you'll catch glimpses of this scenic wonder from various lookouts along the way. Ke'anae is a historically significant village that has been cultivating taro for centuries, and today, much of the land is still used for taro lo'i farming. It's remarkable to think that the soil was brought down here basket by basket, but it's true since the area is made up of young lava rock that was created quite recently (in geological terms) during a massive flow from Haleakala.

Located adjacent to the Pi'ina'au Stream, the Ke'anae Arboretum features terraces built by ancient Hawaiians for cultivating taro, which was a staple of their diet. A paved walkway measuring 0.6 miles runs through the arboretum, showcasing a diverse array of timber, fruit, and ornamental trees from different tropical regions of the world, many of which are labeled with nameplates. With over 150 types of tropical plants, including taro, the arboretum is an excellent spot to observe native flowers and marvel at the vibrant bark of rainbow eucalyptus trees.

As part of our tour, we will make a stop at Ho'okipa beach, one of Maui's most picturesque beaches. It's the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring the Road to Hana. Aside from swimming and snorkeling, you'll have the chance to spot Hawaiian Green sea turtles, known as honu, that frequent the area. Be sure to keep a respectful distance, as they are protected by federal and state law. The best time to view these amazing creatures is in the evening, when many honu stroll onto the shore to rest and take in the stunning Hawaiian sunset.
