Overview

TOUR REFLECT

The truthful acknowledgment of African American contributions to these United States of America since its founding, which is still in limbo or in denial compared to the racism that is wide spread throughout this country for the sake of its southern heritage, in step with keeping it a tradition? Why can’t Americans get with the time?

We break down the other Charleston and the stereo typical mind set of the institution of slavery in this country or shall I say in the Low Country Charles Towne. Were we GULLAH? Or were we AFRICANS? What was the reward for not running? How wealthy were the free People of Color?

Wow! Franklin has found his niche! Everyone benefits from listening to the "untold" stories of Charleston that he has researched and shares so well... stories of contributions made by many of our black brothers and sisters, slave and free, ancestors and current residents, which have shaped the rich tapestry of Charleston's legacy. - and the ongoing story of the United States of America! I especially appreciated Franklin's sensitivity to the reality of this "un-naming" - un-acknowledged credit for the City that stands today as a living, breathing museum of the "real America" as she continues to unfold.

This is an important tour for anyone who wants to begin to understand the often overlooked contributions and sacrifices of so many generations of Black people who built Charleston into the dazzling city it is today. Packed with information conveyed in an engaging way by Franklin Williams, a tour guide whose passion and knowledge are clear throughout. Our tour group was diverse, too, which was a welcome change in a city that is astonishingly white downtown. Highlights - Williams’ stories of the lives of Black residents, artisans and business leaders. Denmark Vesey house, slave auction blocks on neighborhood streets, Mother Emanuel AME Church, Simmons gate and more. Highly recommend.

We had a great time learning the history of Charleston. This tour was the best we have ever had from any place we have traveled.

Our tour was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable and presented information that was engaging for myself and my middle school daughters. Feels like we had a behind the scenes perspective on the business of slavery and the immense contributions of Blacks to Charleston and America.

It's well-worth taking this tour to learn about the things they don't cover on other tours of the city related to slaves who lived in the city. Often-times this type of history is glossed over because it is difficult to hear and talk about, but Franklin did a great job of bringing out the relevant details as we walked an area that was the epicenter of the slave trade in Charleston. I also learned a lot about the contributions to Charleston and America made by African Americans starting with the period of slavery. Franklin's passion and enthusiasm really makes this a great tour!

We learned so much from Mr. Franklin about the history of Charleston. We’re still talking about what we saw. Thanks so much for the illumination.

Absolutely superlative tour. Franklin is passionate - always important in a storyteller - and tremendously knowledgeable about the history of Charleston - which is inextricably the history of slavery. His original research into the forgotten locations of what should be widely-known African-American markers is fascinating, and a testament to his perseverance and passion.Could not recommend more highly. Everyone should take this tour.

This tour was probably the highlight of our week in Charleston. Franklin is passionate and knowledgeable about his subject matter -- qualities that are essential in a tour guide. He's open to questions and savvy enough to pause in the shade for his narration (and to provide ice-cold water for all his guests)! I learned things on this tour that I never would have heard from the "standard" tour guides. Franklin is really rounding out the traditional stories about Charleston history, pointing out small (and large) things that shed light on the city's checkered past. I especially liked the ways that he focused on the agency of the city's African-Americans -- how they built their own culture and community right in the shadow of slavery and the Jim Crow era. I would take any tour that Franklin offers -- and I hope he continues to expand his offerings! Tremendous tour guide and representative of Charleston history!

This is a must-do tour in Charleston. Franklin is an amazing story teller that draws you into the history. Starting at the Charleston gate and iron design, he makes this come alive with the description of the meaning behind the upside down heart, tight curls, fish, and other markings. The auction stones, the lives behind the homes, the slave traders, the skilled & artesian Slaves and freemen, the boundaries of the Wragge district and the lives beyond the other Charleston is fascinating. Not too much walking, more observing and interacting. Tremendous insight into black lives over the decades.

Franklin’s tour was the highlight of my four days in Charleston. Franklin has a delightful demeanor and brings alive the true story of Charleston’s past, not the oft “whitewashed” version presented on other tours. I highly recommend Frankly Charleston.
